LaCiya Garrett

Laciya, Who is your hero?

My hero is my dad because he crafted me into the man I am today. He taught me life’s most valuable lessons and he has been my protector for me siblings and myself. He has been my biggest supporter and the person I turn to when I am feeling down. He pushes me to be the best I can be.

How has being a basketball player changed your life?

Being a basketball player has taught me how to be a leader on and off the court. It has also taught me that everything is not easy and always given to you. You have to work for it and earn it. You also have to work through adversity and it’s important to always hold your head up high.

What advice can you share with kids about being a great basketball player and being a great human being?

Always treat everyone with respect. Treat people how you want to be treated. Listen to your parents and your teachers. Hold yourself accountable and always be honest. Spread love and kindness to others who are going through things. Always be who you are even when no on is looking.

What do you do to ensure your mental health is as strong as your physical health?

I listen to music and workout. Other things that can help are reading, family, and meditating. I highly recommend meditating because it helps control the mind and body and also cleans out any negativity within your body. Always make time to have fun.

When life gets hard, how do you overcome the challenges you face?

Remembering my goals that I need to achieve. I can’t put my head down and give up after every hardship at my doorstep. You have to keep your head held high and always know your reason why. Focus on the things you can control.

What keeps you waking up and pursuing this life you’re living?

My brother keeps me so determined every day and every night. Every time I do something I think of my brother and how bad he wants me to achieve our goal. I think about the moments and times we shared together.

What is your biggest dream?

My dream is to win CIF and State for my brother and playing in college at a D1 level.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Always listen to your teachers and parents. Respect yourself and others. Spend your time wisely. If you have time, go work out. Turn in your work and always put all of your effort into everything you do.
